On March 1, 2007, the Department of Education granted approval to MPI’s Medical Office Administration program.

Medical secretaries work in hospitals, clinics, medical research centers, and private physicians’ offices. Job titles they hold include unit coordinator, medical administrative assistant, unit secretary, patient access coordinator, medical receptionist, and medical record technician.

The decision to establish a Medical Office Administration program at MPI was based on the ever-increasing need for highly skilled professionals in the health care industry. The projected employment of secretaries and administrative assistants varies by occupational specialty; and since healthcare is a growing industry, it will continue to generate the most new job opportunities. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, because of technological advances in medicine and the expansion and aging of the population, employment growth in the health care industries should lead to a 9-17% growth for medical secretaries by 2014.

When we advertised that we are a school of allied health programs, we received many inquiries as to whether we also offered a medical secretary program. Even our former and current students have expressed their interest in the program, especially those who prefer doing the administrative or front office procedures more than the clinical procedures. Our program (2 quarters-455 hours) has carefully selected courses in the curriculum that will help students not only gain the knowledge and skills to perform medical office duties, but also develop interpersonal and communication skills to work with the healthcare clientele. Aside from the medical office administration and computer courses, this program includes courses in medical terminology, psychology of human relations and interpersonal communications, billing and coding, and English for health professions.

MPI will be taking applications for the Spring Quarter (April 9th) of 2007. There is a great community need for medical secretaries. The realization of a medical secretary program at MPI will certainly have a positive impact, not only on health care and education, but also in the overall interest of the regional community.
